simple crystal reports question

sorry, i know this is a very dumb question, but I cant seem to find the answer anywhere.

When using crystal reports with VB, does the data to fill the report HAVE TO come from a database? or could I use vb text boxes or anything to fill the report (I am actually going to use values from a PLC).

I dont want to go through the trouble of installing it if its not what i need.
Thanks,
Paul

I'd recommend you ask this question somewhere like tek-tips.com. When i was forced to use Crystal (what a sack of utter....) i did get a lot of good help there. While someone may well be able to help you here, I would be suprised if that actually happened, as this is a primarily non-windows forum.

personally i don't *think* you can get data from any other source... maybe one of those data dictionary things could interface with other things so it appears to be a db? other than that, access db's are pretty easy to write to and recreate from vb i think. might just want to push and pull data from a small access file.

If you're using version of Crystal that isn't too old, then you can report off an ADO recordset. Usually, you populate the recordset from a database query, but I'm pretty sure you can create an arbitrary recordset in code without ever hitting a database (although I don't think I've ever actually tried to do it).
