SHFileOperation equivalent in *nix

Is there an API like Win32's SHFileOperation in Linux. For example, is there a function to send a file to the recycling bin? I didn't see any "generic" POSIX way of doing this, and GNOME and KDE don't appear to have functions for this either.

Freedesktop.org has guidelines, but I don't know how widely implemented they are even among the desktop environments which are proponents of the freedesktop.org way. For desktop environment and window managers which don't care about the freedesktop.org guidelines, I doubt and consistency at all.

Ultimately there's the unlink system call, but it's not readily reversible.

Oh, cool site. That will help out, thanks.

Windows uses shell folders for things like the recycling bin.
These are objects maintained by the OS that mimic a directory but have special properties.

UNIX has nothing like that - Windows special folders I mean.
