Search repo for files/directories by name with wget

I need a routine to search known repos on the web for named files or directories non-interactively -preferably with wget. Does any have any ideas on how to do this?

My code would use a list of known repositories and would accept the name of a program as input. It needs to then search the repos for a directory which matches the name. The search needs to be able to recurse into category directories.

Can this be done with wget? Or is there some other way? I would implement the driving code in mostly shell script, but need some program that can do the searching.
