(I would look forward for simplicity of basic, exe compiling, and no X or any gui, for real learning)
gnu gcc is great for that but complex and not multiplatform

gcc not multi-platform? Nonsense. Anyway, if you want basic, you might look into wxbasic/gtkbasic which is being used and further developed by some folks at Puppy Linux. The original wxbasic is available for windows also, I think.
