Reading screen contents

Is there a way to 'read' the screen from within a C program. I'm talking about a terminal screen, not a gui. Characters and color attributes.

No. Unless you wanted to get really dirty with the screen buffer, in which case I can't really help you.

What was it you wanted to do? Normally output can be captured or redirected before reaching the screen, if necessary.

I want to 'see' the terminal screen as it exists at the time my program was invoked. Is there a screen buffer? Where can i find it? What's it called? Maybe i don't mind getting dirty, wouldn't be the first time.
