Question for experts. About command line programming..

This is just an idea and I want to ask others about it.

What would be the most stable database software for company of 20 PC's?

My friend have a engine service and they need a software to create work orders, customers, create invoices...

1 - Is it possible to make that software to work from Linux command line, like BestBuy have (dunno if they use linux)?
Would it be most stable option?

2 - What database to use with that, MySql... ?

So general question is what would be the most stable combination for this kind of software?

(please do not answer that best software will be the one without bugs... im asking more about what platform is most stable and reliable)

Thanks for all!

...think about the implications of requiring *The* *Most* *Stable* thing.

Is that what you want?

I would think that LM (that is, LAMP \ {A, P} (which is Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP)) would be stable enough. It the server is to be used for manual viewing/insertion/... (as opposed to hardcore data-munching such as done by, say, google), I would think that an old P2 366 MHz box would suffice

I'm no database expert, but I iirc MySQL is optimized for speed over `iron-coating' (i.e. 100% integrity et al.). Another free DB would be PostgreSQL--but I won't compare them (GIYF).

MySQL will suit you just fine... and if stability is your main concern go for MySQL on a Debian (Sarge) box... it doesn't get any more stable than that...

Other people did compare them...

perhaps a more up to date comparison might be a good idea...

anyways, zaoka, debian comes with PostgreSQL also:

http://packages.debian.org/stable/misc/postgresql

so if you feel you need postgre's more advanced features for your 20 PC setup then you also have that option, while still benefiting from the stability that debian is famous for...

so basically you should start to think about what features you need, cuz as far as stability is concerned, you'll be covered either way if you choose debian...
