Protecting the content of your website from remote/direct linking

Hi,

What are the solutions to protect the content(images, movies, zip, etc..) of a website from direct linking done by other websites?
Let's say that I have a website that is developed using PHP and that there is a media section over there. There are images, movies, and zip files in that section that are candidate of being linked directly from other websites. Is there a way to prevent other from doing so?

Thanks,
Basel Mahdi

You could use authentication so that even if they linked to the file, they couldn't download it without the username/password. Have a look at http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/howto/auth.html - it should have enough info for you to decide if that's what you want to do.
