I don't understand what you really want to do!
if you want to study programming under linux,
there are lots of environments, such as:
Curses, newt, SVGA lib, frame buffer, x window, gtk.....and so on!
you can read some books about them, or,
you can search the resource about them in the web.
Maybe my reply does not satisfy you wish!
I am still a newbie!

Hi,
not sure exactly what you want. You said that want to do a large C project for Linux. Well, what do you have in mind? e.g. game, application, drivers, improvements, etc.
What does the Linux world need? it depends who you ask.

Well, try checking out Source Forge and see what kind of thing you think is missing. Be warned though, there are several thousand projects (sort of) on the go at SF.

If you don't have ideas, here are mine:
1) a Norton Ghost like program to clone partitions (there's already a project with this purpose. you could join them)
2) a programming text editor for X (Using Qt/Gtk, f.e.)
3) a Disk manager like app for disk zeroing and other maintenance tasks
4) help the dillo browser development team
HTH,
vfs.

Work on system call implementation, its a small thing to start of with, understand filesystems/interprocess communication.
Build up concepts understand things and make a vision.
