programming software for linux? what language do you wish to use? what do you know already? you could check out the kernel source code/website and see if you can help with that. check out 'sourceforge' and 'freshmeat' websites there are hundreds of unix-based programs on there that you could download, debug, support, or just get ideas from. what area/topic of linux are you looking to learn? kernel, security, network, etc.
as people say many times, youll learn the most if you just try/use it. install a distro like the latest slackware or gentoo and set it up exactly how you want it. once you are done that im sure youll be pretty comfortable with linux.
