Use .shtml and place this include in the place you want the page's last modification time to be printed:

Change index.html to the name of the file with the last modification date you wish to display. You can specify how you want the date and time to appear.

I used to use Kompozer, it really is easier to write with a text editor and browser. I only use Kompozer when I need to check something (usually tables).

Kate and Gedit are great text editors that double as code editors.
