PHP if(isset($_POST[\'submit\'])) wont evaluate true

Hi
I prepared a self-validation form yesterday at home.... I use php5 at home. I brought it with me to work today they use php4 here at work.
At home it worked just fine but here at work the if statement always evaluates false no matter what I do...could it have to do with the php.ini file ?

if(isset($_POST[\'submit\']))
{
actions
}
else
{
else actions
}
