PHP-GD Issues

I have debian with php 4.4.3 installed. I got this upgrade by adding dotdeb to the sources and doing an apt-get. According to php.net, this release is supposed to have GD already bundled and ready to roll. When I browse to a page with phpinfo() displayed, there is absolutely no GD section mentioned. I cannot run php -m from the prompt. I attempted to do an apt-get php4-gd, and it worked. However, still no GD section in phpinfo() output nor does it actually work. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? This is my first attempt to work with GD, so I am not familiar with the process.

Hi

Did you restart apache after "apt-get php4-gd"?

If you did, check your php.ini file, in the end it should be
extension=gd.so

If it still doesn't work, restart Apache, and then look in "/var/log/apache/error.log" - there should be a clue to why it will not load.

How to start/stop Apache

I did not restart apache. What is the command to stop/start apache? I feel stupid for not thinking of that.

if you have the whereis utility

do "whereis apachectl"

then do

/path/to/apachectl restart

or whereis httpd

/path/to/httpd stop
/path/to/httpd start

or /path/to/httpd restart !??!

of course if this isn't a production server you could have just rebooted if apache starts autmatically
