hi, i'm interesting in picking up perl and using it for web-based scripting. i'm already very well versed with PHP, and am told the transition from PHP to perl is pretty smooth, given the similarities between the two languages.
however, i've yet to find a perl tutorial that effectively explains web scripting to me. i've purchased two books (one of them, "learn perl" by o'rielly was helpful, but not for web applications) and am still pretty stuck.
so my questions is could anyone suggest a site online which delves into web-based perl, and does anyone know of any online manuals/information about cgi-based php (i.e. running a php script as cgi, much like a perl script). any help is appreciated. :-)
If you want to be a productive Perl programmer, you should probably learn how to program in Perl for any task, and not just what you might need to know for web programming. You might be able to adapt a few scripts from a tutorial to meet most of your needs, but once you need to do something out of the norm, you might find yourself lost. The end-all, be-all book for learning Perl is "Programming Perl", by Larry Wall. If anyone knows of a better book, please let me know. It might be a bit much for someone who is new to programming, but if you are already somewhat experienced then it should be a very interesting read. The web-oriented elements should all fall into place once you are familiar with the language.
