I think talented web developers would be paid about the same regardless of language, so long as you can find a company who uses your language of choice. Last I heard, Amazon uses an Apache/mod_perl setup for their enterprise e-commerce stuff, so the big guys are still using open-source software. I would say more web contracts are going to PHP developers these days, but wait until Perl 6 comes out, I'm very interested to see it. I don't see Python as being very big in the web programming game, its like you "can" code CGI in C/C++, but in the real world you don't see much of it. Perl would definately be the #1 in the CGI programming world (probably followed by Python).

I say stay flexible. You never know what a company is going to be using. I was focused all my web programming efforts on PHP for a while, then ended up getting a job in a mod_perl environment. Stay flexible enough that learning a new language isn't so hard. Learn the core web stuff that you would do in any language (use cookies, manage sessions, IO with databases/XML) and learning a new language should be fine.

Also, I can't really tell if you're asking about web programmers pay vs. software programmers pay (ie: comparing CGI/Perl/Python to C/Java/VB). They are different. I would say as a whole software developers get paid slightly more but it all depends. I'm working in web programming now, but I plan on being a C++ or maybe Java programmer when I'm done my comp. sci schooling.
