Hello and Welcome to LinuxQuestions,

It really is up to you and you alone. You'll have to make a decision concerning what you want to contribute to, there are a lot of projects that are eager for contributors. Have a look at Raphaël Hertzog's blog, he's got some helpful instructions on how to contribute to Debian for example.

Kind regards,

Eric

Choose an application that you already use, understand well, and in which you have some vested interest. Add functionality, fix bugs, write documentation, submit to the accordant maintainer. Expect to spend significant time and effort to understand the parts of the code that you need to work on. Expect to spend some time understanding the mechanisms used to participate in the project. It may take some time for the maintainer to establish trust in you. Be patient.
