Parallel port programming for Linux

Hi

I have a electronic device which communicate with a computer using parallel port EPP 1.7. I have a brief description of the communication protocol and I want to write a software to control this device. But I do not know how to access the parallel port under linux and how to use this port. Anyone can help me?
I want to write the software in C++.
