Hey guyz ,hv been workin on PAM ..i hv written code for authenticating users using PAM..the code compiles properly but gives out a 'pam_error' while execution saying : " Error in service module". This error is given out for the 'pam_authenticate' API .PAM has been installed properly on the system.The same code works perfectly on a solaris 7 box ...Any config changes tht i need to make for linux ??? I m using a redhat 7.1 kernel 2.4.7-10.

can you kindly recheck the servicename, module name and the most important module path

in your PAM configuration file

make sure for the path of PAM library depending on 32-bit services (/usr/lib/security) or 64-bit services (/usr/lib/security/64)

Well , i am using the "login" service and the "auth" module. For details regarding path, all the ".so's" are in the /lib/security directory. I am using a RHEL (Red Hat Linux 3.2.3-47) kernel version 2.4.21-27.ELsmp #1. I have pasted below the contents of the /etc/pam.d/login file :

account required pam_stack.so service=system-auth
password required pam_stack.so service=system-auth
session required pam_stack.so service=system-auth

Do i need to set any environment vairables like PATH or LD_LIBRARY_PATH ?? I have put /lib/security into LD_LIBRARY_PATH anyways . But it still gives out the same error.

***API details : 'pam_start' and 'pam_end' succeed while 'pam_authenticate' fails with Error : "Error in service module"

I am also getting the same problem
Error in service module while logging in root through a PAM auth module
while the other users are able to log in successfully.

is there something I am missing.
