I'm not sure if this should go here, in some hardware forum, or in some completely different forum (www (dot) hackingrouters (dot) com perhaps? - that was a joke, not a spam ) Is it possible to hack the firmware of the D-link 4-port wired router DI-604? Best Buy has it for the whopping price of $5 (after rebates, which apparently only *6%* of people actually send in...). But at $5, if it could be reprogrammed to do things other than just routing (mp3 ripping, mpeg encoding, hack in a USB port and make it be a print server, etc, etc).. The D-link page says it'll do NAT and VPN pasthrough (so it has to be more than just a simple switch), and it has an ARM7 or ARM9 (depending on revision)..

6%? Bah!!!

I sent in my rebate form and even wrote it on the calendar. The only way to get them is to make sure you get your rebate. Anyhow, 4 months later, no reply. So I call them up and they have no record of my rebate, please re-apply. I go online and can't find the form I sent out. The form is no longer available from their webpage, and there is no way I can re-apply for the rebate without the form. GRRRRRR!!!!!!

Morale of the story? REBATES SUCK!!!

Hacking it would be cool though. At 5 bucks a piece, could I buy an army of these and use them to take down BestBuy?

Anybody know where to find a copy of the 'hacking_actiontec' file referred to on the SeattleWireless page? All the servers seem to be down..
