Post opengl on the console

is there any way to get my opengl app to run on the console without X? i figure it would run alot faster without the requirements of X. it uses SDL so i thought it might work but when i run it from the non-X console it get an error about no available video devices.

I can give you two answers, the sarcistic one and the one I'm going to give. No.

OpenGL is a graphical API, and as such it only runs in a graphical environment. And no, the X requirements is not that bad - as a matter of fact - it seems that X performs at least 40 % better on any kind of accelerator cards than any version of windows on the same card.

DirectFB

If you're interested in running OpenGL apps in the console, you may wanna look into DirectFB. Its a console Framebuffer based system and allows you run some X apps. I haven't played with it in a while myself, but it seems to have come a long way.

Looks cool. Wasn't aware of that one, so sorry, the answer is in fact yes. I think I'll look into it. Plus (I read quickly so I might be wrong) it seems that directfb supports sdl too.
