Programming This forum is for all programming questions.
The question does not have to be directly related to Linux and any language is fair game.

Smile Not new to linux or programming, new to "linux programming"...

First of all, I want to tell you that I'm new to the LQ forum so if my posting bothers anyone please don't get too mad at me
I'm not new to Linux, nor to programming but I'm new to programming in Linux hence some "newbie" questions:

- I like the Linux and Open Source concept very much and I hate microsoft stuff, nothing new here. I'd like to SERRIOUSLY lern to program in linux and get a related job but "Can an individual earn a living being an open source programer?" or is it only more like a hobby?

- What IDE-s are most commonly used? (I've heared about Anjuta, Kdevelop & Eclipse). What do you use, just curious?

- When programming an X application (with windows, menus etc.) where do I get started? I've heared about QT, GTK etc...

- What about OpenGL programming? I've found some tutorials but most are for Windows. Is mesa of any help?

Thank you in advance and we'll keep in touch!
Hope someone finds some time to post back...

Qt has OpenGL support built in.

earning with open source programming is if your community is funded i suppose otherwise its your volunteering. there maybe exceptions to the rule but. IMO you most probably will need to juggle through more than one jobs per day to earn your bread+butter. I don't do gtk programming nowadays, just some sockets and .. and so i also use vim or sometimes gedit. with vim you will need to learn vim from the basic to the advanced to yield nice productivity. first you will need to decide on the programming language and then decide what to use. vim gives nice support for c, c++ programming, for java there's netbeans which is superb, QT is nice for graphical frontends (i liked it a lot).
