Noobs java question on applets probably easy...sorry in advance

How do you easily change a standalone java program into a java applet insertable into HTML? there a convert command or do you have to change the code a bit and if so how?

You have to change the code. First you must realize about java's "sandbox" that is, if the application tries to access the hard drive or open a socket, the jvm for applets won't let it do that unless it has a signed security thingy. After that, you just have to add the extends applet bit and change it so that the main frame uses this in frame. That's basically how you do it in brief, may be some errors...

I would recommend Bruce Eckel "Thinking in Java" (which is freely downloadable in a lot of places, just search it in google). I believe that he proposes a "framework" for developing programs that could easily be changed from stand-alone applications to applets.
I would warn you that he does not comment specifically about converting one type of program into an another but rather the way of developing programs that can be´ported with little effort.
