Question networking / internet / programming

I recently decided to try out programming a simple network based game. I haven't done any programming involving networking before so I wasn't sure where to start. Anyway, I downloaded SDL_net and compiled some networking demos in C. The simple server/client demos work fine over my home network but not over the Internet.

So here's the problem. I want to write a server/client based program with about five clients connecting to my computer(server) over the internet. What I don't understand is how to tell the client programs where I am. My dsl modem IP changes on a regular basis, and even if they connect to that IP the modem gives the computers on my home lan 10.0.0.xxx IP addresses. So how do I this? I know almost nothing about networking so any help would be appreciated.

You can sign up for a dynamic host site like www.noip.com. Then configure the modem to forward the port your using to the server.

You need to use something like http://www.no-ip.com
You will be able to choose a "name" on internet
They will give you a little progam, you need to run it as a deamon on your computer, it takes only a little configuration
Then your friends will be able to access your computer using the name you choose
