need advice on user interface libraries

I am creating a user interface and I want it to be able to control the entire screen. Right now I am just starting the computer in virtual console mode and using curses. However, it would be nice to have something a little more advanced. Would any of Qt, Gtk, wxWindows be capable of controlling the entire screen or do they depend on a window manager to be running? Any other possibilities?

Have a look at SDL.
