Mobile programming / ARM

I'm interested in programming for mobile devices (phones / pda's). I've looked into things like BREW and j2me. From what I understand, BREW will let develop in C/C++, but a compiler will cost about $1500.

Are there any free compilers that run on linux? Is j2me completely free? I've read the j2me faq but didn't quite understand when i should contact their 'sales reps'.

I really appreciate any pointers.

Regards,

unholy

Also, Palm OS developers use gcc along with other tools for free development in Palm.
