makefile suggestions for new app I've written

I've started a new project. The home page is

www.abiscus.com/narp

I'm looking for help with the installation. I use GTK+ and some of the gtkextra widgets.

I found it easiest to embed narp into the gtk+-2.0 installation because all I needed to do was tweak the Makefile.am and Makefile.in files and let configure do the rest.

This is a hack. I've failed at getting my own makefiles to work.

Would anyone point me in the right direction on how to properly make an installer for Linux? Also, what is the correct/common directory tree for Linux software packages? Any more suggestions on proceeding with this project using community standards?

Thank you.

The usual approach is to use the autotools toolkit. You can find a lot of good information online. Google 'gnu autotools tutorial'.

With respect to file placement, there is the File Hierarchy Standard (http://www.pathname.com/fhs/), which Linux distributions tend to honour, though they may not always prefer it. However, for your python libraries, it may be more appropriate to follow python's directory scheme--whatever that may be.
