loading playing sound

Hi all,
normally I use openAL or SDLmixer to play load sounds. However I'm now developing on a embedded board. It's real basic stuff, slow ARM processor, but the linux build does have ALSA. So I need find out a tutorial or a real small simple library to play sounds. I think the sounds will mostly be waves? can anyone advise? I'm using C/C++ on a custom linux build.
Thanks!

A google search "sound linux embedded" gave me this hit:

http://free-electrons.com/doc/embedded_linux_audio.pdf

There, they talk about the libasound (ALSA lib) library to play sounds.
