libc++ compile error

Hi all,
I'm trying to compile some code from another developer, I'm using debian etch. However I get the following error

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lstdc++

I can see both libstdc++.so.5.0.6 and libstdc++.so.6.0.8 and the link to .so.5 and .so.6 exist in usr/lib. I know the software uses .so.5 as this was installed from the configure. Can anyone advise? Thanks

-lstdc++ shouldn't be used, the standard libraries are handled by the compiler and linker for you.

That maybe so, but this is bought drive software, not stuff I've written myself. So I still need to know is there away around this?

Get rid of the option, that shouldn't cause a problem.

That really isn't supposed to happen... This is a C++ program, right?

Yep it's C++, it's a driver so I didn't write the programme. When I take the libary out of the linker in the makefile ie just delete -lstd... I get three error telling me that some defines from GCC are the wrong pointer types, you know the sort of thing when you try to point to a word using a byte.
