LFS bash not compiling

I am trying to make Linux from sratch. In compiling bash I keep getting a link error of ld "-lc not found". The line that invokes ld has a c library listed.

Have you tried cc=gcc as an option?

ld is called because of the line gcc -static -rdynamic -l<??> -lc -o mkbuildins mkbuildins.c

if it said c missing or incorrect option I might know where to start but "-lc" not found. -lc should have been converted to a library addition.

I compiled it once but had compiled with a missing space in options.
