The question does not have to be directly related to Linux and any language is fair game.

Smile Language for Chess Evaluation (experimentation)

So I am aware of the speed and end benefits of C(++) for this task in a conventional way; however I am looking for a language that would be interesting/powerful from the standpoint of:

1. Statistical Analysis
2. Pattern Analysis
3. Native Array and Vector Operations
4. Native Mathematical Functions

note: 1. I have no need for a GUI, and may not even get to the point of a 'move engine' but simply stop at a position evaluation engine
2. I am not interested in speed.
3. I am personally most comfortable with Python but I might be interested in trying something else. (though feel free to suggest this if you think it fits).

You may take a look at a functional language, Haskell or Ocaml for example (because of Pattern Analysis).
For statistics there's R, but I don't have experience with it.
As for Array and Vector Operations, don't all languages provide this?

As for Chess I would recommend to take a look at Common Lisp, because of it's history in AI there are most likely some packages for you, see this link http://www.iqool.de/cc.html
For Common Lisp I would recommend to read the newsgroup comp.lang.lisp

BTW: Lisp is not slow!
