Know of any sites where software developers hang out?

I want to look into having an application built and need to look into finding a good coder for a non web based program.
All though my idea is completely different from these 2 examples, I'm looking for something that is written in the same coding language as a program like adaware or InterVideo DVR
I think these are written in Linux and window based coding.

[edit] offtopic - cool this is the 257,001 thread on this site[/edit]

I don't know of any particular sites where programmers get together, but if it exists it's probably drowing in vi vs emacs, C vs C++, perl vs python vs ruby, and so on ;)

Are you trying to keep your idea out of public view, or can you post it here? I'm looking for a project to spend my free time on while I come up with new ideas of my own... if you post it here, you might get five or six different implementations from various people (or none at all... who knows?)

Here's my idea:
Im gonna be able to sit on my couch and with one remote I'll be able to do TV, VCR, DVD etc, just like any universal remote can do.... but what my idea is I will install motors on the curtains that I will be able to open and close the curtains using my remote, I'll also have a switch in the lights to turn on, off and dim all from the remote.
I need a computer program so the remote signal goes to a box that goes to the computer that sends it back out to the lamp or curtain or whatever.
I have my computer hooked up to my TV so I could monitor and change settings with my remote on screen. I will also be able to set an auto timer to do things like open the curtains at 7am. The possibilities are endless, you could attach your ceiling fan, oven, even add voice or sound commands.....gotta love the clapper.
The first version I'm looking for something pretty basic though to keep the price down but want it to be easily upgradeable and easy to install plug ins. My idea is to make this product that is easy enough for the average to to be able to install himself.

I can't answer about the developers site, but just advise JINI should be considered in this project, as it was designed for this kind of application.

I'm sorry, I know web based coding but I'm not familiar with that kind of coding. What exactly is JINI?

jlliagre 11-22-2004 03:25 AM

It's a Java based technology allowing devices to advertise their capabilities to their neigbourhood.

Here's an overview:

You can find Jini projects at www.jini.org.
