KDevelop - Trouble Getting Started

Hi there,

I'm trying to get started with a tutorial on how to use KDevelop. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and installed KDevelop with apt-get. The tutorial (here: http://www.dazzle.plus.com/linux/KDE3/part01.htm) says to go Project -> New Project, then select C++/KDE/Simple KDE Application.

However, the only way I can open a project is "New From Template", which only gives me a choice of four different types of cmake project (three with GUI, one plain).

Anybody got any ideas? Have I not installed some plugin or something?

the tutorial is for kdevelop3
you are working with kdevelop4 which is not ready yet
http://www.kdevelop.org/

as fare as I know only cmake and qmake project templates aviable in kdevelop4 at the moment.

personal tip: its not a bad idea to learn how cmake works

I used KDevelop a moderate amount with Mepis (which should be very similar to using it with Ubuntu).

I was frustrated for a while at the beginning, because I couldn't find any decent instructions on what other packages you need to install to make KDevelop useful for C++ programming and/or compatible with a tutorial.

Most of the packages you need in order to use KDevelop are not understood as dependencies by the apt system, because depending on what you want to do with KDevelop, they may or may not be required.

Maybe some expert has a better suggestion. I mainly made a lot of guesses and installed a lot of packages until KDevelop became usable.

Thank you both for your replies - I did think I was using 3, since the 'about' dialog showed version 3.9.*. It hadn't occurred to me that this was basically a version 4 beta.

Ta very much!
