KDE hacking in Debian

Hi folks

I'm planning to start hacking KDE source code and now I'm looking for a good distro for it.

Currently I'm using Debian stable on my machine, but as you all know the software in Debian tends to be a bit old. For example, there is 4.4.5 version of KDE. Qt version also isn't the latest.

May be someone have any experience in KDE develoment and can give me some advices wether it good or not.

I've thought about switching on testing or unstable Debian's branch, but there is only KDE 4.6.5 there. I know, that there is an 4.7 in experimental, but it has appeared there only on last week.

Thank you!

I don't have any experience developing KDE, but I do know Debian policies.

I would say Debian is not the best distro for hacking KDE, exactly because of those policies. There are many changes made by the Debian maintainers as compared to the upstream source.

Indeed 4.4.5 in Stable is outdated. But you also say that 4.6 in Unstable is too outdated, but 4.7 in Experimental too premature. That sounds inconsistent.

I see you are also running Slack, which is known for the unmodified use of packages. What would be against using Slack?

I have nothing against Slackware, but just don't use it for now Debian has a lot of ready for use packages, but may be outdated.

Thank you, jlinkels for your opinion!
