Java Compiler?

Just wanted to know what compiler do peeps use on linux. I'm a University student and they want me to use textpad (Win) but I kinda want to go home and just use linux to be able to program Java? What do you think would be a replacement for textpad to run on slackware?

I use the blackdown-jdk to do java under linux. Of course this is a combination of a VM and a byte code compiler. The Sun java-sdk is also availible for linux. If you are looking at just compiling the code into machine code for your machine, and not running on a VM gcc will compile java. You are best to try and use a VM/SDK that is compatible with what you are using on Windows in class though.

For compiler, use the latest from sun http://java.sun.com . Download the SDK form the link on your right on that page.

I use IntelliJ for the coding part, and CVS for versions, backup and teamwork.

Use NetBean IDE, can easily loaded from javasun site. It is very good IDE + everthing installed and configure itself, but bit big.

I'm not sure if it's on Linux, but being from IBM I imagine it would. Look into IBM WebSphere Application Developer 5.1. It's damn good.

Ok, IBM WebSphere Application Developer 5.1 license with 12 months of support = $4,335
Sun SDK/Blackdown SDK = $0

Unless I am missing something the trail version of the IBM software is only valid for 60 days.

JBuilder personal edition kicks ass if you have the processing power to use it (don't try it on your P2-233... I have a P3-700 w. 384MB RAM and it runs ok, but a little sluggish at times).

NetBeans IDE

Nice, familiar interface and it's backed by Sun Microsystems. Similar look and feel to the MS IDEs like .NET (which may or may not be a good thing).
