Is it possible to add a "DESTDIR" variable in makefiles that don't have it ?

Some makefiles like those inside ffmpeg CVS don't have a DESTDIR so it's kinda difficult to create packages because you need to use the --prefix parameter and then edit some of the files generated after the installation.
Mostly text files that have directory information.

So it could be very usefull to use a DESTDIR parameter in that cases.

Do you have any ideas instead of going through the autoconf && automake process ?? Especially this way is kinda risky because the developers may edit and change the configure script before they give it to us and those changes may be vital ..

I don't know for this specific case but you can check the 'install:' targets and probably this will call the install program for files and directories, here you could try to insert $(DESTDIR) in front of every path

if it doesn't use install you need to check what technique is used to specify the installation paths and prefix all those paths with $(DESTDIR)

One can usually override the prefix when installing, though some makefiles rebuild things if the prefix changes.

But checkinstall usually does a decent job of creating packages without having to faff around with the makefile.
