IDE for cooperative programming over network/internet

A friend and I are talking about creating a simple program in C++ to help us learn to use Irrlicht. We're looking for an IDE that will enable us to collaborate over the Internet without the need for VNC, though we can get VNC working if necessary. Preferably this IDE should work on both Linux and Windows. Any suggestions?

Also you can try http://etherpad.com/ which is web-based.

Why do you need VNC in the first place ?

I.e. why do you need t see somebody else's screen in the process of cooperative SW development ?

It's not a big deal really; we could easily do without that ability. Right now we're just trying to find out what our options are. This project is all about experimentation.

@nc3b: Thanks, we'll check those out :)
