Did you try the inferior command:

inferior infno
Make inferior number infno the current inferior. The argument infno is the inferior number assigned by gdb, as shown in the first field of the `info inferiors' display.

Sounds like you're trying to do two things with the same terminal </me inserts clever rendering of a paperclip with eyes>
Perhaps you meant the "Screen" command. Where you can start/stop/detach/attach running login sessions (telnet, ssh).
