Eh .. so what exactly are you expecting us to tell you ?

"Go to your shell prompt and type: vim msn.pl. Ok, good. Now, press "i" once. Now, type the following : #!/bin/env perl, now press return .. good .. now .." ?

Learn to program in perl first, start of with small, achievable tasks [i.e.: do you know how to print "hello world" to the screen? how about to a file ? how about to have a client send it to a server and the server sending it back via sockets ?] .. and Then get to stuff like this. Also remember that programming is not so much about the program used but about technique and wit. And it's not something you learn in a week/month/year.

Good luck.

Creating a chat program is not a simple task. Perhaps you want to use programs that already exist, like aMSN, Gaim, Kopete, etc.
