How to create a ISO immage for Linux Mandrake

Hey every one. i just downloaded linux mandrake 10, and i was wondering if any one knows how to make a ISO immage so i can install it to my computer.
right now i am useing Windows 98SE and dont want to buy Windows XP because it is really slow on start up. well i hope one of you guys can be of help. thanks.

If you are trying to burn to a CD, your burning software should allow you burn a CD by collecting all the files that you downloaded. It can also burn to an ISO image file. Just remember to set a 'bootable' option so that you can boot with the new CD.

If you don't have a burner, I don't see why you will need to create an ISO file in the first place... I believe you can also create a boot diskette, and then specifiy where your files are so that you can install via the hard-drive.

You're burning software will create the cd's from the .iso files. There should be a menu option to do that.
The iso file is an image file of the cd. If the cd it was created from was bootable, then the cd will be bootable.

ok, but how would i create a boot diskette? i have burned the CD but i cant boot from it. well i hope you guys can help.

If you downloaded the non-bootable version of Linux, then go through the Mandrake website and find out how to create and boot from a boot diskette. This should be easily available in the first part of the Installation manual. The boot disk allows you to boot from the CD easily.

However, I remembered before that when I was installing Debian, I could just set a 'bootable' flag in my CD burner and then the CD becomes bootable. Try that if you can first.

not to overlook the obvious but is the boot from cd option enabled in your bios?

Yes i had it enabled, but that did not work. do u guys know of any sites to download mandrake 10?

What do your disks look like? Can you examine files or did you just burn the .iso file as a file itself. If you can view the files look in the Mandrake/i586/images directory. There you could find an image to make a boot floppy. The boot.iso is a ~4 MB cd image that gives you a menu option to select how to install the system.

Some people haven't been able to boot with the first cd. They are able to boot with the second cd and then swap to the first cd when prompted.

ummm ok, this is how the file is. it says Mandrake10_0cd1. when i click on that it brings up Easy CD Creator. thats where i get stuck becsuse i cant open up any of the files for Mandrake10_0cd1 (also for CD's 2 & 3.) this is the site that i downloaded it from, http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/ftp.php3

  2. Make a boot floppy with Windows



  If your computer cannot boot from the CDROM, you must make a

  boot floppy under Windows as follows:



    * insert the CDROM, then open the icon "My Computer", right click on

      the CDROM drive icon and select "Open"

    * go into the "dosutils" directory and double-click on the

      "rawwritewin" icon

    * insert a blank floppy in the floppy drive

    * select "D:\images\cdrom.img" in the "Image File" field (assuming

      that your CDROM drive is "D:", otherwise replace "D:" as needed)

    * select "A:" in the "Floppy Drive" field then click on "Write".



  To begin the installation:



    * insert the CDROM in the drive, as well as the boot floppy, then

    * restart the computer.

The image file to create the boot floppy is called cdrom.img:

Also download the 'dosutils' directory for the rawrite.exe utility.

This will help you if after burning the iso file properly, you still can't boot.
