Are you talking about the --retain-symbols-file option? This isn't necessarily portable beyond GNU, either. Also, it will only restrict what the user "knows" is in the final object; the text table will only show what you want them to see, however a smart linker can still link to what's not listed. I personally use all three: user vs. lib headers, attributes, and retained symbols.
