help to broadcast alert for a php based chat engine

i have actually made a chat engine based on php and mysql but i facing a problem to broadcast alert to all the online members of the chat room when any of the user has typed in a message. the problem is related to the situation whenever a usr has minimised the chat window he/she should get an alert whenever a new message has been posted on the chat room
