Why not install something new like Fedora Core. Redhat 9 reached its end of life last year and is no longer recieving updates and support from Redhat.

Note that base configuration can be applied to gcc-3.4.5

I have a question along these lines. Co-worker has a small computer from DSL (Damn Small Linux). He would like to use Fedora Core as his development system (on a different box) and "cross-compile" for the DSL box. However libs, gcc and even kernel (DSL=2.4, FC=2.6) are different.

So question is, how hard is it to do this? Compile on FC4 to run on DSL. He's thinking of actually downgrading from FC4 to RH9 just because of this. DSL maintains they will probably never go to 2.6 because 2.4 has legacy stuff they like plus it's a smaller footprint.

Anyway the way I see it his options are:
1. Use RH9 as the dev system
2. Upgrade DSL to 2.6 by hand and keep FC4 as the dev system
3. Setup some small environment on FC4 that contains all of the old libs etc that DSL uses

Am I missing anything? Any other options? Prefered methods?

Thanks.

From my past experience, install/upgrade of gcc from source is a big pain. Better go for rpm installation.
