Arrow Help finding a Java editor/compiler

I'm somewhat new to linux, and definatley new to programming in linux. I usually code Java programs on my windows box with a program called JEDplus. This program allows me to edit, compile, and run the program very easily with just a few clicks. It will show any error in the code and allow me to reedit and recompile on the fly.

I was just wondering what you guys out there use to code and test java programs. Are there any decent replacements for JEDplus for linux out there. I've been messing with Jedit, but am not able to get it to function like JEDplus. Maybe I'm just going about this the wrong way.

Any help will be much appreciated.

These all seem like great programs. However I have to admit I am a newb when it comes to this.

Is there some where i should look for info on using one of these programs (netbeans ide in paticular).

In windows i can compile, build, and run a .java file using JEDplus. But using these other programs for linux that you guys have mentioned i can only get as far as opening the java file. How do I compile build and run? THere seems to be certain setting for configuring the java development kit and whatnot that i just don't understand.

Honestly when it comes to coding java in linux i can't get farther than HelloWorld. I just don't know all the little settings needed to make a fuly functioning editor/compiler/builder.

If you're willing to help, please be as basic as possible. As i mentioned before and as it says so under my name, i am somewhat of newb.

Select the soucre file in the FileSystem window and compile it with F9, run with F6, also reachable with the contextual menu (right click).
see the quick start guide at http://www.netbeans.org/kb/articles/quickstart-36.html

Use ECLIPSE!

For Java development under both Windoze and Linux I use http://www.eclipse.org/.

It is a complete extendable java IDE with many options. Lacks extensive support for enterprise development (yet) but has very serious ideas.
Lately Eclipse and JBoss "bundled" together to provide a complete Enterprise Development Environment for the OpSource comunity.

You would need a JDK: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html
Avoid using 1.5 yet.

So: J2SDK SE 1.4.2 from Sun + Eclipse 3.0.1 (Linux GTK version)

Lachezar.
