Well, there are lots of resources online, but it depends what language you want to use. Python could be a good starting point and there are lots of free online books. Try checking the python.org site for tutorials and books. Another good site is Oopweb.com, they have free books for java, c++,C etc.

in my opinion .. i think all online resources suck my advice is splurge your self in barn and noble and look at all the books not even to buy just look and find one you like

I think http://www.ibiblio.org/obp/thinkCSpy/ is a really great book for first-time programmers. It teaches things the (imho) right way, and it teaches a simple yet powerful and real-world useful language (python).

Oh, you lied? Shame on you ;) -- chances are you'll probably find some of the chapters of thinkcspy redundant and/or too verbose.

I have tried a number of programming languages and the best i have found is c++, there is a great free tutorial here: http://cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/index.html
c++ may be a little harder to learn at first, but i think it pays off.

Don't be messing around with all them wacky languages :tisk: Teach yourself some Perl and you will definitely find yourself performing useful tasks ages earlier than with C/C++.
