Question hacking the linux kernel boot-up

Hello all,

My question is regarding the linux kernel programming.
What I am trying to do is to boot-up the minimum necessary for executing C-code. I wanted to reuse the linux kernel boot files but I don't understand the assembly code in i386/boot/bootsect.S and setup.S that well.
I have tried to create a bzImage consisting of a small assembly file calling a small C function but the image failed to execute properly.
I would really appreciate any solutions/code as well as links to websites (linux kernel assembly files are not really self-explanatory).
Also, what is that minimum requiered for execution of C code?

Thanks to all the Gurus, ;-)

Have you thought about Linux from Scratch? That starts with incredibly small images and builds up.

As far as the assembly itself, you could try a search on The Linux Documentation Project site. I tried a search for 'kernel' and 'assembly' and received a number of links. As I don't know too much about it I can't be more specific.
