GTK, pango markup

Hello;

I am trying to make a label give some bigger text... So here is a piece of the code:

GtkWidget* label = gtk_label_new("test");
gtk_label_set_use_markup(GTK_LABEL (label), TRUE);
gtk_label_set_text( GTK_LABEL (label), "<span size='larger'> test </span>");

I compiled this with:
gcc -Wall -g test.c -o test `pkg-config --cflags --libs gtk+-2.0`

output is a normal sized label with:
<span size='larger'> test </span>

I have pango installed...
What am I doing wrong?

help is always welcome.

Geert.
