Welcome to LQ.

./configure --prefix=/usr/

etc. etc. ... please read further info here
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ighlight=gpsim

And not telling which Linux you are using
prevents us all from providing a precise answer.
So please tell, what you are using.
Like CentOS 5.x, Fedora 11, Redhat EL5, etc.

And you will of course need the "gtkextra-20" package
for your specific Linux. ( Like gtk+extra-devel ).

Your gtk+xtra2.1.1 package may not have installed the gtkextra-20.pc file which is needed by pkgconfig to find the libs and headers when configuring other packages which need them.

The required gtk+extra and gtk+extra-devel
are in the epel.repo

# yum install gtk+extra-devel

epel.repo "Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux (EPEL)"
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/FAQ#howtouse
.....
svn checkout https://gpsim.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/gpsim/trunk .
The gpsim "rev. 2076" compiles with no errors on EL 5.
