Question Good way to get into programming again

I have done some programming in the past, but it has been about two years since I have done any significant coding. What would some of you recommend I do in order to reacquaint myself with writing code? Most of the programming I have done is the past has been in C++. The problem I am having is thinking of a project I could to get myself back in. I thought I might be able to do something in the open source community, but have no idea what size and kind of project I should look for. I have all the reference books form college classes I have taken. If anyone has some suggestions on other books that are a must have let me know. The only experience I have had has been in college classes. What ever help you all have to offer will be very much appreciated.

I was (and still am, somewhat) in the same predicament a little while back. Eventually I settled in and decided to work on a little project. If you're interested in helping out, let me know!

I've also been toying around with other project ideas; thinking of creating a new Linux distribution for older hardware (or, along the same lines, a distro designed expressly for ease of use), though that wouldn't involve much actual programming. I've also been trying to think of ways to create a new style of computer interface that is not based on the desktop metaphor, though that's a tough concept to tackle.

The problem is that I don't have any projects to my name. The only experience i have is what I did in college. It has been nearly two years since I have programed anything of size. What I want to do is start programing again. I have been reviewing my programming books in order to bring myself back up to speed. I have to done any GUI programming in the past but would like to do some. G guess what I am looking for are some suggestions on very small projects that would be a good exercise, and possibly some help when I get stuck.

my advice to you would be what my first project was...write a text editor. Although I did it in Win32, I didn't use a pre-built model, and so doing that helped increase my knowledge of Win32 indefinitly. If you use Linux, I suggest find a good toolkit and make yourself a text editor, it is not hard.
