gnome applet

I am newbie and just start learning how to programme applet using gtk. After searching on the internet, it seems that it needs bonobo, which uses corba (http://projects.gnome.org/ORBit2/appletstutorial.html). Is there any alternative way to create applet without corba? Or any other approach would be more lightweight?

Many thanks,
