Getting practical knowledge? (C++)

I've taken a bunch of courses and stuff in C++ and still feel as though I can't actually _DO_ anything. I was advised to "join an open source project", but when I look at the source code to programs I run it's well beyond my ability to understand, especially if they have GUIs.

What do I need to do to bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and the real world?

I too find open source projects hard to understand, they're either not commented at all, or the ones that are commented are very big programs.

think of something small you're interested and try it out.

Where I learned to code was from the Half-life SDK. Half-life, for the uninitiated, is a FPS by Valve Software. If you have it, (the game) the SDK can be downloaded at www.valve-erc.com. Just mess around with that, like adding fun stuff to the weapons. That's how I learned. There are plenty of forums and other resources available to help you to. Good luck.
