freedesktop system tray programming

I want to get involved into a little programming of a xmms plugin for xmms that appear as a tray icon. Where can I find documentation on the freedesktop system tray API and features? I took a look at their web page, but didn't find the api or the features.

An easier way is EggTrayIcon:

It requires gtk.
